WMVA off the air
« on: September 29, 2016, 09:08:22 PM »
The WMVA transmitter took a direct hit from this evening's storm. Engineer will assess damage tomorrow, but from the looks of things tonight the damage could be substantial. Will advise when we know more.

Thanks. Just when I thought we were going to make it, that last crack of thunder bit us. Power went out for a bit, but the transmitter took the hit. Smells like an electrical fire in the transmitter room.

Looking to make temporary repairs to get WMVA back on the air. The earliest we will be back on is this evening - more likely tomorrow morning.

Thanks! Appreciate the kind words. WMVA is a no-go today. Optimistic we'll have her back on in the morning. She took a bad lick from that storm yesterday evening for sure.

WMVA is back on the air. It appears we will be able to carry the Xfinity race the truck race, and the Nationals game. The UVA game and the UNC game will be on WHEE.

Repairs are temporary. Engineer will need to take WMVA back off the air for awhile Thursday next week to make permanent repairs.

WHEE experiencing audio issues
« Reply #7 on: October 01, 2016, 11:18:12 AM »
CenturyLink provides our audio STL (studio link) from our studios to our transmitter site. Around 3am this morning the connection at the transmitter site became intermittent (cutting off and on). CenturyLink advises this morning that a technician will not be available until Monday.

We have switched to our backup emergency line.

The Xfinity race scheduled for 2:30 pm this afternoon has been postponed until 4:00 pm due to rain. The Nats game is scheduled for a 4:05 pm start, so the Xfinity race has been scratched from our broadcast schedule today.

Sorry I forgot I had asked you, there is a glitch in the audio from time to time for a second or two sometimes longer...so you end up missing a word or two.

Didn't hear it Monday, but I did hear it today. Not on Rome's show, but Tiki's show before it. They are called "digital dropouts." The result of the speed of the data being greater than the received speed of the receiver. The receiver buffers and buffers until it fills up, then the audio drops out until the receiver can catch up then it comes back in.  If you're listening, as you say, you miss a word or two. Very frustrating. Our signal strength could be low, there could be some noise getting in the signal that's causing it, or it could be the receiver dying a slow death. If the latter is the case it'll get worse. If it's the first two, we should be able to manage it quickly. The Engineer will be in Thursday and I'll have him take a look.

I appreciate you making me aware of this. I keep it on all day, but I'm monitoring all three stations and I'm rarely listening to it close enough to catch this.
