Thought I'd kick it off. Last night I watched "Hyena Road" on Netflix. Canadian movie made in 2015 about Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan. Quite well done.

i was dissappointed in longmire this year. i hope there are better writers next year. making longmire an idiot by not knowing standing bear is hector makes the show look weak i think.

Watched "Eye in the Sky" last night. I enjoyed it from the perspective of seeing how drone technology allows us to fight a war from a cubicle in Nevada. Otherwise, not much about this movie seemed realistic to me and I didn't like the portrayal of drone pilots as sappy, emotional, and teary-eyed.

I watched Sicario. It tells us that the war on drugs is growing ever more vicious and that the wall would do little to stop the drugs or illegals. They were entering the US through tunnels. But, hey, build the wall. Trump can employ some of those illegals he has laid off from his hotels since the brand took a hit. No doubt it will be on time and under budget...LOL.

I just watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The trilogy was filmed in Sweden and follows the books by Stieg Larsson in complete detail. This story has everything you could want in a thriller. I was blown away by the books when I finally gave in and read them and the movies are tremendous. I rented them from Comcast (something I almost never do), or somewhere, when they were first available on line. I am guessing that was in 2009 or 2010.

After The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo came The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest. The US movie version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is big on production values, but it changes the story line from the book in a very unsatisfactory way. It lacks the sharpness of the Swedish version and falls far short of the mark in my opinion. Netflix has all three Swedish movies with English subtitles and they are very much worth watching. There may be four or five movies in my adult life that I thought worth watching more than once and this trilogy is about to be added to that small list.

Stieg Larsson died before he could enjoy his fame, so these are his only books. What a loss.

I've seen the US version and liked it. Now I really want to see the Swedish version, but I have a very difficult time doing subtitles. I either watch and don't know what they're saying, or I read and miss the action. If I try to watch and read I get a headache before it's done.

Mars is another great show I am watching on the National Geo channel. It's a semi documentary about NASA going to Mars in the year 2033,with real life interviews with scientists today and actors in the future traveling to Mars...no alien stuff here, very realistic.

Interesting. I watched the first two episodes of "Designated Survivor" last night. You've got Sutherland from 24 Hours and Maggie Q from Nikita fame! I wondered what had become of her. Entertaining show. Acting is a little campy so far.

Last night I watched "Traded." I mean... I've always been a sucker for a western and if Kris Kristofferson is in it then I'm giving it a watch. This stupidly simple movie was a waste of time. When Trace Adkins shows up running a brothel, chugging shots of whiskey, and shooting unarmed men for having rough sex with his women I knew this wasn't just going downhill... it was going to fall off the cliff. Snakes, kids, teenaged prostitutes, gunslinging ranchers, incest, this one's got it all... and nothing worth anyone's time. Even Kristofferson says at the end of the movie when he gives his horse away that he's retiring. If this is all that's left for him, he should.

Currently watching season 6 of Gold Rush on Hulu.  It's my secret pleasure to then go onto a facebook page called "Gold Rush Alaska Gossip" where they basically bash the show each week for being so scripted/fake and Todd Hoffman for being lazy and eating too many tater tots.

Prior to that on Netflix- Penny Dreadful, The OA and Stanger Things.  Currently watching The Travelers on Netflix.  I enjoy Scifi obviously.....

I'm a cable cutter, so no Comcast.  I subscribe to Sling TV to get my cable channel fix.  Still need to get an antennae up for on air stations though.

I have Century Link and usually average 9-11 Mbps download speed (live in Chatmoss area).  With CL, speed is dependent upon how close you live to the source....or something like that.  It's plenty fast for my needs.

Sling TV is probably the biggest reason I make it without cable.  It has the channels I watched the most when I was on cable/satellite.  AMC, TBS, Syfy, USA Network, HGTV, History Channel, etc....

As a disclaimer, I will not do business with Comcast and have not for 8+ years.  I had Direct TV, but they tried to force me into a contract when I moved.  That basically forced me to cut the cable in one fell swoop, whereas I had hoped to ease my way into it.  Once I found Sling TV and knew I could get some basic cable channels I liked, it was much easier than I thought.

Season 2 premier of The Magicians came out on Syfy last night.  I would describe it as adult version of Harry Potter.  I read the books and enjoyed them, so obviously have to watch the show.

Also found a series called Taboo on FX, which is pretty cool. Base in England during pre-revolutionary war time.  Not sure where it's going, but creepy enough to keep me interested.

Watched a documentary called "The 80's" on Netflix.  More of a political documentary of Reagans presidency. Lots of good stuff and things I had forgotten.

I'm streaming both from the Sling TV app on my Roku.

I want to endorse Taboo as well. So far the taboo seems to be the former relationship between the main character and his sister who rejects him completely after his return from abroad, but his experiences in Africa flicker tantalizingly in the background. The dominant theme is his contention with the East India Company, as well as the British and US governments to control an island he inherited near the prospective US-Canadian border as negotiations are taking place to determine the line. It adds a high stakes political element to his darkly sinister personal life.

I want to endorse a scifi show returning for a second season. The Expanse is a fascinating adventure in space, also with political elements. The conflicts are more complex than in Star Wars, because there are multiple sides. Beautiful imagery characterized the first season, so it has plot and graphic appeal. I posted praise for this show on the old forum too.

I too started watching Taboo. dark piece of work there by Tom Hardy. I like the storyline so far. I hope I can stay interested.

SIX is another one you all should check out. I think it's on the History channel. focused on Seal team SIX. Walton Goggin from Justified is one of the guy and I recognize several of the others too.  So far so good, 2 episodes in and one recorded last night.

The Expanse is playing on the SciFi channel and I noticed that it is available on Comcast Xfinity. I agree that SIX has been quite good so far. Given the kidnapping of a girl's school population several years ago by Boko Haram, it is sailing very close to reality.

SciFi also available on Sling TV.  And they are making the season 2 episodes available on Demand as they come out.  I have not figured out how I can go back and see season 1 episodes yet, but I have not investigated too much yet.  I know you can see them on SciFi website as long as you have a cable subscriber passcode, but not sure if my SlingTV payment gives me this type of access.  I need a snow day to find the time to do this.......

Hacksaw Ridge was just wonderful. The bravery and strength shown by an unarmed man was more than impressive,it was legendary.Do not miss this film.It does have some extended battle scenes that are extremely graphic but well done. This film deserves many oscars but not sure if Hollywood is ready to forgive Mel Gibson just yet over his drunken anti jew rant he spewed out while being stopped by the law.

Last night I noticed a new app on my Ipad called "TV." I ended up watching the pilot of Westworld. Anyone else watching this? I don't subscribe to HBO - and this is an HBO original series. Netflix doesn't have it at all and Amazon has it for rent. Comcast makes it available on demand, if you have HBO. After the pilot my Ipad app said I could watch all of season 1 for $38. That's a little steep for me. But I may have found a new favorite way to watch TV. Ipad and bose headphones are the bomb.

Anyone watched Quentin Tarantino "Hateful 8"?

As a fan of Pulp Fiction and Reservior Dogs I thought this one was a so-so film, at best. Anyone have any suggestions on other movies like the classic Tarantino style? In the modern Netflix era Ive started to save money and not go to the movie theater anymore!

So the wife and I generally watch a 30 min. sitcom in the evening. Nothing current... something older and preferably something we haven't seen... which is most of them. We started with Frazier and watched every one, then we backed up to Cheers and watched all of them. About that time one of our nieces from Chatham got a job working the home games at Hooker Field so she stayed over with us when she had to work. She got us on to Friends. Watched them all. We couldn't find anything else on Netflix, so we joined Hulu because they had a few. Considering the cost of cable, $7 a month is pretty reasonable for something you watch everyday. So we picked Seinfeld. Confession... before now I had never watched a complete episode of Seinfeld in my life. With about 10 episodes under our belt, I can say the show is not very funny. A smile sometimes, but it's just not what I consider classic in anyway. Just don't seem to get that New York humor.

Last night the family and I watched Will Ferrell in 'Everything Must Go'. Its a big turn from his usual comedy, laugh-out-loud roles into a more serious character that is downtrodding and struggling with life big punches.

Its on Netflix as "comdy", and while there is some dry-humor in it it is far from an average comedy. It turned out to be really good, somewhat depressing at times, but overall one of his best performances. Well written, and well produced. My family and I turned out to be surprised and in agreement.

I've been watching Twin Peaks on Hulu.  It's different for sure and I have no idea where it's going with the story line, which is a good thing.

Twin Peaks is an American television serial drama created by Mark Frost and David Lynch that premiered on April 8, 1990, on ABC. It was one of the top-rated shows of 1990, but declining ratings led to its cancellation after its second season in 1991. It nonetheless captured a cult following and has been referenced in a wide variety of media.[3] In subsequent years, Twin Peaks has often been ranked as one of the greatest television dramas ever made

I have a weakness for westerns and boxing. Last night it was boxing. Manny is undoubtedly one of the most incredible athletes ever. Watched this one last night.

Straight up documentary. Don't watch it if you're looking for a boxing movie. Very well done, but it's pre- Manny vs Mayweather. I had no idea Manny was still boxing. Still holds the title in about 3 classes and is scheduled to fight in Austrailia in a couple of months.

Watching the documentary on Manny got me curious about Ali, so I did a little digging and found a little lost gem (for me). In 1977 Ali played himself in "The Greatest." Among the cast - Earnest Borgnine as Angelo Dundee (Ali's trainer), Robert Duvall (Bill McDonald - the boxing promoter that worked the immortal Ali vs Sonny Liston card) and James Earl Jones (played Malcolm X - a hoot!). Probably silly to a lot of you, but I loved this movie.

Just finished up S6 of Shameless, have to wait for awhile till Netflix puts up the newest season.I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed this show.
I watched the last episode of Bates Motel last night, really good series and it's not what you might think.Better Call Saul is by far the best show on TV right now,S3 is introducing a lot of the Breaking Bad characters and that has made it so much better. The 1st season was a bit slow but S2 was much better.S3 is shaping up to be the best yet though.

Watched the pilot of the Worricker Trilogy last night. Very nice mystery. Well written. Sharp plot with twists and turns, not gore and guts. Christopher Walken joins the cast on the second episode. Can't go wrong with that.

Finished 2nd season of "Better Call Saul" on Netflix last night. Went to Comcast on demand and they have all of the 3rd season except the first episode. 2nd episode is due to go off on the 17th. I sprung for the $2 on iTunes and got episode 1 there. At this rate I'll be on time for the next live show Monday night!

especially when he hit that one guy in the throat and scared the big guy off just by saying something to him. i love the character of chuck, and his and jimmy,s weird relationship. the former lead singer and founder of styx has a similar condition to chuck. dennis deyoung has a sensitivity to light which leaves him unable to tour.

Season 2 of the Shooter starts on Tues, July 18 at 10:00 PM on USA network. Season 1 is on Netflix. It's a good show; not so harsh as Animal Kingdom. At least Swagger is a good guy. There aren't any good guys in Animal Kingdom. The Queen of the South is vaguely similar to Animal Kingdom, except it focuses on the low level cartel world rather than American sweathogs.

I have been watching the second season of The Tunnel on PBS and I think it is the best crime series currently on TV. The tunnel in question is the Chunnel that links the UK and France under the English Channel. A French and a UK investigator must work together to solve the crime. The main characters are wildly different and lead interestingly dysfunctional lives, but the story line is complex and absrobing. WBRA does it a serious disservice with its lousy scheduling, so I have to record it to view it. It is well worth viewing however you have to find it. I did notice that Season 1 is on Amazon Prime.

How many seasons is it? Might be one of those things where if you've gotten hooked on GoT, then you have to decide, is it cheaper to extend the HBO subscription until you've watched it all, or is it cheaper to buy the seasons and watch them that way?

Someone else was trying to get me into Game of Thrones. I would watch it, but I don't subscribe to HBO. We are trying to keep our monthly entertainment bills to a minimum. That's why I use a homemade antenna to watch TV! LOL! Problem is, too many people on Facebook like to spoil the show for you, so if you're not watching it that night, you pretty much need to stay off the internet until you're able to see it.

People did that with the Walking Dead as well. Another show I never got into. Never have understood why people think they need to post details about the show as soon as it's over when the large majority of people time shift their shows and watch them later?

From what I understand they are running season 7 now. Next year will be season 8 and they said from the beginning 8 was it.

Definitely cheaper to get HBOgo if you've got a streaming device like ROKU. You get the first 30 days free and then it's 12 or 15 dollars a month (can't remember). At the rate I'm going, I won't be able to watch all 7 seasons in one month. Even if I have to spring to a month after my 30 days $15 for 70 hours of programming is as cheap as anything I pay for. I'm a couple of episodes from finishing season 2 now and hasn't cost me anything. The best way in the world to watch a few and see if you're into it.

Roku is a small box or USB stick that you plug into your TV and through Wifi you get a lot of different channels like Netflix or Hulu and HBO...now you have to pay for the subscription for those but some channels you get free......most newer Blu-Ray devices also come with those apps as well.

Currently watching Narcos season 3 (Netflix original) ... Pretty sure that when season one dropped they talked about how it was their most expensive production to date due to the on location filming in South America. They effortlessly weave real historical footage and photos in with the actors, which adds to the realistic portrayals of the events.

Just to add a somber note:

Quote

Mexican location scout Carlos Muñoz Portal was shot to death in a violent region in central Mexico Monday while scouting for season four of Netflix’s hit show “Narcos.” The seasoned scout, who worked for Stacy Perskie’s Mexico City-based production company Redrum, has a slew of high profile credits to his name, including, “Sicario,” “Spectre,” “Fast & Furious” and “Apocalypto.”

...Muñoz’s bullet-riddled body and car were found in a remote area near San Bartolo Actopan in the state of Mexico near the borders of Hidalgo state, which is said to have one of the highest murder rates in Mexico. In July, 182 cases of homicide were reported in the densely populated state, a ratio of 12.2 for every 100,000 inhabitants.

According to local reports, authorities have had trouble piecing together the circumstances that led to his killing, given the dearth of witnesses.

Netflix’s season 4 is said to be exploring the origins of Mexico’s infamous Juarez cartel just as season 3 focused on the rise and fall of Colombia’s Cali cartel and heralded the shift of the drug wars to Mexico.

Amazon Prime is showing season one of a Russian series based on the famous novel by Vasily Grossman, Life and Fate, which has been called the War and Peace of World War II. Grossman was a war correspondent from the beginning of the war who covered the first year disasters, the defense of Stalingrad, and eventually followed the Russian army to Berlin. Life and Fate was confiscated by the KGB and never published in his lifetime. Ten years after his death from cancer in 1964, a copy of his novel was smuggled out of Russia on microfilm and published in the West--the first edition in Lausanne in 1980. The novel has the same breadth and depth of Tolstoy's great work. My copy is 871 pages with an additional 7 1/2 page addendum identifying the characters. The TV series opens during the great battle of Stalingrad. There is some narration in English, but all of the dialog is in Russian with very readable English subtitles.

Pretty sure they start filming in October and the last season is supposed to drop around September of 2018 (a little over a year from the previous season.)

Minor spoiler follows if you haven't seen the latest season!

After each episode of this season aired, there was an in-depth interview (I'll try to find links if anyone is interested) with the director of that particular episode. The director of the episode where Dany's dragon annihilates the Jaime's army gave some really interesting insights into just how painstakingly difficult these shoots are.

I remember a quote somewhere along the lines of how it took almost 4 weeks to complete a sequence that got all of about 30 seconds worth of air time ... There are so many locations and the shoots are so long, that the directors communicate back and forth, getting each other to film different shots for the other depending on where they are located, due to the massive difficulty of travel and their being so short on time to crank out the next season within viewer's expectations.  I think he said each episode takes around 4 months from the start of shooting to its being complete, so they must have quite a bit being shot concurrently.

The directors are given the script for their episode about a full year in advance so that they can craft a "reasonable" budget. Each and every minute detail must be given thought before it ever goes before a camera due to how expensive the effects shots are.

Pretty interesting stuff. It was also mentioned that HBO, other than advocating for advanced planning to stay within budget constraints, seems pretty well content to stay out of the filmmakers' ways and give them the creative freedom to go their routes. He said that of his two episodes this season (the one I mentioned and the final episode) the only time HBO stepped in was when they were burning diesel fuel to create the heavy black smoke left in the dragon's charred path of destruction. Due to health concerns he had to settle for CGI in the remaining footage, lol.

Very interesting. Having watched the entire 7 seasons now and considering it all cost less than a ticket to a movie with popcorn and drink, I'm content to watch what I watch at home now. "TV shows" have reached the quality of the theatre now.

Considering all the awards "The Handmaid's Tale" has won, I decided to give it a try last night. A friend on Facebook said they did the same and it was so disturbing they didn't know if they were going to be able to watch anymore. I guess I'm not easily disturbed, I thought it was pretty good. Enough to watch another episode. I just don't know if the theme of the whole thing is something that will keep my interest. We'll see.

Had the best night's sleep last night I've had in 6 weeks. Thanks to "All the Way" - and HBO documentary about Lyndon Johnson. Bryan Cranston (Walter White / Breaking Bad) plays Johnson and that's worth watching by itself. He's amazing, except this one scene where he gets out of bed and it's like they forgot to put the makeup on. He looked just like Walter White in 1 scene. Crazy. Anyway, the cast looked like most of West Wing's cast and the tedious Dr. King scenes were drawn out and uninspiring. Slept in the chair last night. Out like a light.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a president like Tom Kirman? Able to work with both sides but not give up on his principles. This show is very patriotic and I like that.

Completely agreed. But some movies are still best watched on the big screen with the company of others. I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan by any means. But I can tell you I will be at this December's opening night. I am 1,000 times more excited to see this on the IMAX screen than I could ever be to watch it at home.

The awards, the acclaim, yada yada yada, I feel like I'll have to watch this at some point. Looks extremely well made and acted, but .... I don't even know what the subject matter is, but I don't think I care about it lol.

This reminds me of when I asked a buddy what he thought  the best movie of all time was. He thought and thought and thought. His answer:  "The Longest Yard." And then he clarified, "Not the old one with that old dude, but the new one."

Funnily enough, I was flipping channels in a hotel one night and came across this. It was well into it and I didn't want to get too invested as I prefer to watch from teh start. But I was absolutely entralled by Cranston's performance as well. I also fell asleep somewhere along the line  :)

Also, Bryan Cranston was nominated for an Oscar for in 2016 for Trumbo, the true story of a blacklisted writer who penned many movies under assumed names while being investigated by the FBI. Haven't seen it yet, but it looks fantastic.

24 is supposed to be coming back with another soft reboot within the next couple of years. No Sutherland is expected, but they are going back to the ticking clock format.

Well... I've got to watch Trumbo. Thanks for the trailer.

Also - I watched the second half of Cranston's portrayal of LBJ last night and have a much better impression of it now that I've seen it all. As much as Cranston looked like LBJ when the dressed him out, for the life of me I don't get what happened in 2 scenes where it looked like they just forgot to put the makeup on. It looked like "Breaking Bad" goes to Washington.

Finally got to watch Wonder Woman the other night. My goodness, Gal Gadot is smokin' hot! I'm going to enjoy her in the DC universe! The movie was fantastic as well. I must admit, it would have been kind of funny to have seen her transform into Wonder Woman the way Linda Carter did back in the 70's, but I know that would have been cheesy.

Finished Stranger Things 2.

I'll wait till I some others have finished it before I comment : )

However, the box office is way down this weekend and, while not the singular cause, Stranger Things 2 on Netflix is being deemed a big reason people are sitting this weekend out.

Got through episode 4 last night. One scene (I won't spoil it for anyone) my wife absolutely hated and I didn't care much for it either. I hope it doesn't discourage her from watching the rest of the season, but I thought it was a bit unnecessary. Other than that, I really have enjoyed it so far.

We finished Stranger Things 2 this weekend. Man, such a great show! Don't know if they'll do a season 3 or not, but if they do, I hope they hurry up and do it before the kids all grow up! I think what I love about the show more than anything is the 1980's setting. Everything is 1980's! The hair styles, the clothes, the cars, the styles of the homes, the sound track. Such a brilliant idea!

They are def doing a season 3. It has not "officially" been greenlit, but the Duffer brothers (Creators/Writers/Exec Producers) said in a story today that they are currently writing the 3rd season and are planning to delve more into the characters rather than increasing the magnitude of the show this go round.

Again, although it does not "officially" have the green light, this is nothing more than a formality. The Duffer brothers have openly said they have a 4 seasons planned and Netflix execs have said they are trying to get the brothers to span the story into 5 seasons worth of material.

I have to say, I was not as impressed with the second season as I was with the first from a storytelling perspective. Not that it was "bad." The events just did not occur as organically. However, it was absolutely entertaining and difficult to stop watching on any given episode. The cliffhangers really drew me into "starting" the next episode, which basically turned into watching the rest of the episodes, lol.

The best thing about the first season is that it really does feel like a movie from that time period. It gives off the same vibes as the Spielberg classics although with just the right amount of extra "edge" to feel modern in ways. It was also very well shot, written, and acted. It was a well made 9 hour movie that balanced being individually excellent while giving just the right amount of homage to the classics ....

The second really felt like an 80's sequel ........... Where the first 80's movie would be well made and introduce and interesting universe and characters, and the sequels inevitably would play up whatever the audience found entertaining ...

And I think that's what it comes down to for me ...... The first season had merit as a standalone, the "sequel" season was pure entertainment in the same way the Lethal Weapons were, Rambo, Rocky (even released late 70's) ...... Most of those franchises started out the same way. I mean Rocky was an OSCAR WINNING MOVIE for cryin out loud. Even though I love them all and Rocky V is a fav, it definitely a'int Academy Award material lol .....

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the Duffer Brothers latched onto something that made this feel like the ultimate homage to the 80's in so many different ways.

--------------------------------------------

Also watched Mindhunter on Netflix .... about the creation of the profiling methods that the FBI uses. Made by the director/creator of House of Cards, Se7en, Fight Club, Social Network .....

Pretty interesting ... I would say what makes it so interesting is the philosophical and scientific questions it brings up ... It has that monotone dragnet type feel to it. Worth a watch.

Also, if you've never seen Fight Club or Se7en, you are missing out. Probably two of the most mind blowing surprise endings ever ... Both changed the game in Hollywood when they came out.

----------------------------------
One other thing, looks like Spacey is out of House of Cards. They may continue the show, but Netflix mandated that they will not bring it back if Spacey is involved at all. Regardless of the man's personal issues, he played a character that owned the show. The world of that show does not work without his character, and I seriously doubt I will be continuing with it.

Honestly, the show  has been going downhill since Frank Underwood became the president. I think the best ending would have been the season finally when he walked into the Oval Office with that ominous music in the background. The aura of the show was about the long strategic game he was playing to reach the pinnacle. Once he reached it, there was just no climax that could equal it.

I think the first season was definitely better, but that's because I didn't know what to expect when I watched the first season. So, everything was "new" to me. By season two, there are expectations being formed, and almost always, sequels and second seasons don't live up to the first season. That being said, I quite enjoyed the second season. I'll admit, though, if these seasons had more episodes, it wouldn't be as good. I think 8 episodes is the magic number for shows like this. Basically like a "miniseries". I think I did read somewhere that Stranger Things was going to be 4 seasons, and a possibility of a fifth. I would say that the Duffer Brothers need to have this done before the kids all grow up. It's not going to be nearly as good once these kids are teenagers and college age.

This is probably the only "horror" show my wife will watch, and it's basically because it's in the vein of Goonies, and she loved the Goonies. If it was more like the American Horror Stories, she wouldn't watch it. But I think the biggest appeal to me, other than the characters themselves, is the fact that the show's setting is based in the 1980's. My favorite decade by far, and this show lets me get lost in time. I wished there were more period shows as well done as Stranger Things.

Agree with this as a historical reference, but things are quickly changing. For example, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Man in the High Castle are just a few examples of how programs in recent times have changed the game by becoming even better than the first. Once the "world" is created, the showrunners have a vast sandbox to play in.

This is most directly related to the fact that seasons and story arcs can be planned out long-term, as there is no reason any longer to cancel tv shows so prematurely due to the fact that as a minimum, they can fill out a streaming library. Basically, any non-network show can eek out at least 3 seasons at this point. This allows slow starters to find an audience, and allows for foreshadowing and plot development on a much grander scale.

Westworld is a prime example of a show that has benefited from this. I absolutely expect the second season to blow the roof off the first and this show will become HBO's Game of Thrones replacement.

With all that said, I feel like Stranger Things did not get better ... it was a little more "popcorn" entertainment as opposed to organic character and plot development as the first season was. But, my thing is that ... this is basically the formula of the 80's franchises ... so whether intentional or not, the Duffer Brothers created something that, so far, is an ultimate homage to 80's movies, while being individually unique at the same time.

Completely agree. While we all want "more," that's the problem with a lot of network shows .. They have to fill 22 episodes. Sometimes less is more.

Love the quotes there on "horror." lol ... I agree, it's such a weird hybrid of "family 80's film" mixed "just over the line" horror without becoming a true horror spectacle. In other words, it's a "fun" scary as opposed to something disturbing.

Quote

Love the setting also, and as mentioned, it truly captures the "feel" of the period... But, with the caveat of feeling like the movies of that time period as opposed to what it felt like to live in that time period. If that makes sense lol.

If you like the 80's, Halt and Catch Fire from AMC is a 80's setting as well, and moves into the early 90's by it's end.

I have to give Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, and Deadwood props for the "most realistic" period settings though. As good as Stranger Things is in this department, there are a lot of Easter Eggs and product placement that wouldn't have been that realistic back then. Those Ghostbusters costumes? Come on. We all know you weren't getting ANYTHING that authentic back then lol.
